HMP Preston Integrated Mental Health Team (I.M.H.T.)

The team offers a full Mental Health assessment from initial reception through to discharge, this is carried out through referrals from other prison staff, including healthcare professionals, prison staff, probation officers, drug and alcohol workers, teachers or the Criminal Justice Liaison Team working in the police custody suites.

Assessments are carried out within the 'Stepped Care Model' of care, with Step 2 & 3 being Primary Care Assessment, Counselling and IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) services, and Step 4 being Secondary Mental Health Service with Care Coordination.

The I.M.H.T. also offers a Crisis resolution service to prisoners between 8.00am and 4.30pm every day of the year, this offers a 'Crisis solution' and support service.

The I.M.H.T. also attend all A.C.C.T. reviews within the prison in order to maintain close links with the Safer Custody Team at HMP Preston encouraging early intervention for Mental Health issues.

How to access the service

Single Point of Access (SPoA) referral form can be completed by any member of staff at HMP Preston who has concerns regarding the mental health of any prisoner. The team will then discuss the referral, before deciding on the level of urgency. The team then offer a routine or priority assessment at Step 2/3 or 4 (stepped care model).

Crisis service: By telephone to the office or by contacting one of the I.M.H.T. team who will pass the concern on to the duty crisis worker.

Access to Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) via Mental Health Practitioners or directly from SPoA referrals meeting if appropriate.

Access to Counsellors via SPoA or Mental Health Practitioner referral following assessment.
