Arkwright Crisis Support Unit

The Arkwright Unit is a community service which consists of 6 chairs, this is not an inpatient unit and is a service aimed at providing a short term safe therapeutic environment where people in crisis can have further assessment. People can stay on the unit for up to 23 hours. People can then be referred to the appropriate service, or be discharged into the community.

The Arkwright Unit is located on the Royal Preston Hospital site in the ground floor of the Avondale building. The Unit is signposted for access.

The Arkwright Unit is a 24/7 facility that provides an alternative pathway for people requiring urgent mental health on-going assessment and experiencing mental health difficulties in crisis. Along with support of staff, people can think through the nature of the crisis and about the help they need to recover both short and long term. The Unit will provide a safe environment for those in mental health crisis and will allow our staff to constantly assess and support the person.   During the time on the unit, a discharge plan will be formulated and in place and liaison with other services will have occurred.

Referrals in to the Arkwright Unit are made by Mental Health Professionals via the telephone; all referrals will require a current risk assessment and Health and Social Needs assessment.  An over-the-phone triage will be carried out by the Clinical Practitioner who will have the final say in the decision to transfer the person into the facility. Referrals in to the unit can be made through the following teams:

  • Assessment and Treatment Team
  • Home Treatment Team
  • Community Mental Health Team
  • Mental Health Liaison Team
  • Criminal Justice Liaison Team
