Blackpool and North Lancashire

The inpatient mental health units in North Lancaster are sited in Lancaster and Blackpool providing 24 hours care for patients in the range between the ages of 18-65 years old in Blackpool and adults over 18 in Lancaster. The Lancaster Unit at The Orchard is now an 18 bedded inpatient mixed sex all age unit. 

The Harbour, Blackpool, is a 154 bed mental health hospital, which provides care and treatment for adults who cannot be safely treated at home. The ward team is multidisciplinary and includes a variety of mental health professionals. 

Churchill and Orwell Wards are acute mental health wards and accommodate male patients from the age of 18 experiencing an acute mental illness requiring inpatient care. This also includes dual diagnosis of mental illness as the primary diagnosis, with personality order, learning disability or drug and alcohol misuse.

Shakespeare and Stevenson Wards are acute mental health wards and accommodate female patients from the age of 18 experiencing an acute mental illness requiring inpatient care. This also includes dual diagnosis of mental illness as the primary diagnosis, with personality order, learning disability or drug and alcohol misuse.

Keats Ward  is a male Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The PICU will provide an environment of a higher relational, physical and procedural security, in order to safely care and treat patients who are acutely unwell, posing a higher risk to themselves or others and requiring lower stimulating environment.

Byron Ward  is a female Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The PICU will provide an environment of a higher relational, physical and procedural security, in order to safely care and treat patients who are acutely unwell, posing a higher risk to themselves or others and requiring lower stimulating environment.

We aim to provide a high quality service to adults with mental health problems of a severity that requires in patient care. We will assist the individual to achieve and maintain mental health enabling him/her to resume their normal lifestyle.

The Inpatient Restart & Recovery Team work across all three wards providing individualised recovery focussed treatment plans in collaboration with the patient. The team provides a wide range of opportunities to participate in occupational activity both in a group or 1:1 setting

For some patients this may be a brief stay for intensive treatment and support, others who suffer from severe and enduring mental illness may require more frequent admissions. These services form part of the patient pathway and work in conjunction with our Crisis Resolution Home treatment and Complex Care and Treatment & Early Intervention Services.

How to access the service

Any requests for beds are made through the Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team who provide a gatekeeping service to the wards
