Minerva Centre Exterior

Medical Recruitment - Rheumatology

The Rheumatology Service transferred from an acute setting to the community in September 2010.  This has provided a unique and exciting opportunity to redesign the service.

The team is based at the Minerva Health Centre in Preston which is a purpose built long-term conditions centre.

Though we are a community based service we have strong links with the acute trust to which we provide an in-reach service. The team consists of 3 consultants supported by an extensive multidisciplinary team including 4 clinical nurse specialists, 2 physiotherapists, an occupational therapist and podiatrist.

Being community based enables us to be more accessible to our patients and lots of our long-standing patients appreciate being seen outside of a hospital setting in a more relaxed environment. The service was acknowledged by the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society in 2014 when it was awarded a Healthcare Champion award.

We are actively involved in research and recruit patients to a number of portfolios studies, this has been acknowledged by the appointment of a dedicated rheumatology research nurse. Teaching is another high priority and we are involved in under-graduate and post-graduate teaching and many of our medical students have presented their work at regional and national meetings.

Working outside of a hospital setting does provide opportunities and challenges and we work collaboratively with rheumatology colleagues in the region and have developed various biologics pathways and guidelines and shared examples of good practice.

We recognise the importance of involving patients in service redesign and this has led to a number of service developments. These include a dedicated Ankylosing Spondylitis clinic led by our physiotherapist, our fibromyalgia education group, a reconditioning exercise group and hand group, we have also redesigned our website with input from patients. We have an active patient support group and members of the team regular present to the group.
