Quit Squad on hand to help smokers

Posted on the 6th February 2015

The Quit Squad, Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s stop smoking service, is encouraging smokers in Lancashire to get in touch and set a quit date to get 2015 off to a healthy start!

For many people, a new year brings with it the notion of a fresh start and the perfect opportunity to make changes to their lifestyle. It is estimated that around 7 million people in the UK will have made a New Year’s Resolution to improve their health and the most common one amongst this is to stop smoking. Smoking is the biggest cause of preventable death in England with one in two long term smokers dying prematurely. Stopping smoking helps to improve breathing and general fitness, as well as reducing the chance of developing illness such as heart or lung disease. Choosing to stop smoking can also mean people are not only healthier but also financially better off, as a 20 a day smoker can save over £2,000 a year!

Julie Trezise, Quit Squad Manager at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“It is important that people set themselves realistic and achievable targets to get the most out of their quitting plan. People who access NHS stop smoking services are four times more likely to quit than willpower alone. Contacting the Quit Squad means people have the support they need when they need it. The team are on hand to provide a range of advice and support tailored to the individual. Even if you didn’t start at the beginning of January, now is still a great time to make a decision to change and with our help you can have the best possible outlook for a healthier and smokefree 2015!”

Joan had been a smoker 45 years when she contacted the Quit Squad. She explains:

“I finally decided to contact the Quit Squad after having a small health scare. I had been a smoker for a long time and so the thought of stopping was initially quite daunting. However, the team were fantastic and we talked through the options available to me. I started using Champix, a treatment which reduced my cravings and the desire to smoke. It wasn’t easy at first as the treatment made me feel queasy however with the support of my Stop Smoking Advisor I felt able to carry on and now I’m so glad I did. The help I received was first class and the team do a wonderful job. Despite having to deal with several stressful situations which would have previously had me reaching for a cigarette, with the combined support of my loving family and the Quit Squad I kept on going. I’m so happy I stuck with it and the satisfaction I felt at finally kicking the habit and not giving up when times got tough was worth it. It shows that even after 45 years it really is never too late to quit!”
