With the Christmas countdown well underway, veterans who are experiencing emotional and mental health difficulties can access support from the Lancashire Military Veterans’ Service.
For most, Christmas is a time for celebration, good cheer and family reunion but for ex-service personnel it can bring a range of complications. A veteran’s Christmas is often filled with anxiety, depression, loneliness and family conflict. The festive season can trigger memories of traumatic events which can cause past emotions and feelings to resurface. When returning from the forces many people are faced with trouble in finding employment, financial worries and homelessness. This can affect their mental health, making it hard for them to lead an independent life. However, the Military Veterans’ Service for Lancashire is at hand to support.
Joe Crocock, Military Veterans’ Service Manager at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said:
“We understand that this time of year can be particularly challenging for veterans. People often become lonely as it is usually a special time to celebrate with family and friends and many veterans suffer with issues of the past and the loss of friends or loved ones in the forces.
“Christmas is a sensitive time which makes it extremely difficult for people to ask for the help and support they need. We are looking to remind veterans in Lancashire of the service we provide and want those who feel as though they have nowhere to turn to get in touch with us. Many members of our staff are veterans themselves and others have family members in the forces, meaning they understand how tough it can be.
“The service is here to help, support and guide people to the skills and tools they need to begin to build a stable life again.”
The Military Veterans Service is a partnership between Lancashire Care and Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust. The service provides valuable insight and understanding of life both in and out of the forces as many staff are veterans themselves or have family members in the forces.
