Live Healthy Gain Extra Time Tournament

Posted on the 7th April 2017

People in Lancashire are being invited to take part in a football tournament to combine to improve their mental health as part of Mental Health Awareness Week.

Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust’s Community Restart Team provides help and support to people living with mental health problems enabling them to improve their quality of life and experience positive new challenges. The team works with individual service users to provide tailored support for things such as employment, finances, housing and social inclusion.

The service had previously worked with service users and the community to develop community football groups to tackle social isolation and increase overall health and wellbeing. They have since worked with the Lancashire Football Association to develop a community league which teams from across Lancashire take part in every month. As part of the Trust’s week long programme of events the Community Restart Team are holding a football tournament at the Play Football in Preston between 12-4pm.

David Murphy, Service User Development Co-ordinator in the Central Lancashire Community Restart Team at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“When people are experiencing mental health problems it can lead them to withdrawing from support networks such as family, friends and local communities. We want to encourage people to get back into their community and social networks at their own pace as this can have a positive impact on their recovery and sustaining improved mental health and wellbeing. Taking part in exercise is also known to be a great way to improve our overall health and wellbeing so we combined the two to create a football league.

“As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, we are holding the tournament to encourage people to get involved and enjoy themselves.”

Andrew Whitaker, Football Development Officer at the Lancashire Football Association said:

“This event is to help use the power of the national game to help tackle the stigma attached with mental health. Working with key partners such as the community restart team we are able to work together to deliver world mental health awareness events.“

The event will be held at PlayFootball, Tag Lane, Preston, PR2 3TX. Anyone interested in taking part in the tournament should register their interest by contacting Andrew Whittaker on 01772 624000/07889 804863 or David Murphy on 07500 976725.
