Lancashire Care Dream Placements

Posted on the 8th March 2018

Local students experienced a dream placement behind the scenes of the NHS in Lancashire to prepare them for careers in healthcare.

Thtee sixth form students from Cumbria were selected to undertake a one week placement as part of Bay Healthcare Partners ‘Dream Placement’ programme. The students were chosen from over 150 applicants, all of which are deemed the brightest within the up and coming next generation.

Students began their week by visiting the Trust’s Headquarters in Preston and went on to spend time within a range of clinical services and different managers to find out more about what it takes to make it in their chosen career. The students had the opportunity to meet staff from all levels of the organisations and learn about the wide range of behind the scenes services needed to provide patient care. As part of the placement, the students they were also given the chance to find out more about working at leadership level, meeting with senior colleagues to get a feel for how they operate and the different aspects of their role.

The NHS is committed to supporting local young people to develop a career in health. By working together across students have access to a wider network of opportunities and can gain a good understanding of how different parts of the health system work together.

Farzana Kauser, Recruitment Manager at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“We are really proud of be part of Bay Healthcare Partners and to be able to offer the opportunity for young people to come and find out more about working for the Trust. The Dream Placement programme provides young people with a great opportunity to gain a clear understanding of what it is like to work within the NHS.”

Vicky Lumley, Careers and Engagement lead at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust said:

“The programme provides young people in Cumbria with a fantastic opportunity to gain ‘behind the scenes’ access to organisations and employers. It is wonderful to see the students grow in terms of independence and confidence throughout the week, but it is also fantastic to be part of their journey from education to employment, and equip them with the skills and experiences to apply for jobs, apprenticeships or further education.”

Dream Placement, organised annually by the Centre for Leadership Performance, sees public and private sector organisations across Cumbria offering students placements to learn more about leadership and future careers in the area. The placements are highly competitive with almost 200 applicants in total and, of these, 90 were interested in health careers.
