Lancashire Care Consultant invited to be part of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) group at Westminster!

Posted on the 3rd April 2018

A Consultant from Lancashire Care is acting as a voice for people in Lancashire who are directly affected by ABI, by raising key issues and seeking improvements in services to Ministers and MPs in a Parliamentary Group.

Dr Czarina Kirk, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at Guild Lodge, a secure mental health facility in Preston attended an All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) held at Westminster last month. The UK Acquired Brain Injury Forum (UKABIF) launched the group late last year which is chaired by Chris Bryant MP.

As the only NHS provider of secure ABI rehabilitation and due to Czarina’s role within the Faculty of Neuropsychiatry she represented the Trust at a meeting in the House of Lords. Czarina took part in a round table discussion around crime and offending behaviour and also informed the group about the existing service at Guild Lodge. Czarina provided useful information about the outcomes in specialist secure ABI rehabilitation facility and some of the commissioning difficulties experienced including national bed shortages and the extent of sexual offending and complexity in this population.

Czarina Kirk, Consultant Neuropsychiatrist at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“It was a fantastic experience to see the workings of an APPG and the genuine interest and concern that was expressed. The most important thing to me was how we have a shared goal, vision and a determination to work together to support this population, whether we be from the voluntary sector such as Headway, Children’s Brain Injury Trust and UKABIF, the Independent Sector or the NHS who are each pooling our resources with hopefully now, some backing from Parliament.

I hope to attend a lobbying event in the House of Commons on 9 May 2018, which is during ABI awareness week. I am so pleased to have developed a new network of likeminded people and it has been a pleasure to keep in touch with them sharing some of my expertise and experience and learning from them too!”
