Posted on the 12th February 2019

A Healthcare Support Worker with Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust has recently been awarded a Cavell Star Award, for providing exceptional care her colleagues, patients and their families.

Diane McCabe from Lancaster, has nursed elderly and acutely ill patients for 45 years and has been nominated for going above and beyond for her colleagues and patients. Diane recently turned 70 and retired but was missing her team so she returned to do a few regular shifts at The Orchard, inpatient mental health unit in Lancaster.

The Cavell Star Awards is a new national awards programme given to nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants who shine bright and show exceptional care to their colleagues, patients and patients’ families. The awards are held in partnership with Lloyds Pharmacy Clinical Homecare and sponsored by NEXT, UNISON, NHS Improvement, National Garden Scheme, Health Education England, NHS Professionals, Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps, Alexandra, British Journal of Nursing, The Embassy of Belgium in the UK and Thornbury Nursing Services & Scottish Nursing Guild.

Diane McCabe, Healthcare Support Worker at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust said:

“It was a big shock, I thought we were going into the office for a meeting. But it was lovely to get the award. My team mean a lot to me. We feel low sometimes too and things get us down but my nursing team are always there for each other and we help each other through the day. As well as our team huddle, we also have a team cuddle. We’re there for each other, without a doubt!”

Margaret Jenkins, Modern Matron who nominated Diane said:

“Diane is kind and compassionate and puts everyone else before herself. Most of the team refer to Diane as ‘mum’ as she will always make sure others have had a break, a drink and something to eat. She will always be on hand with a listening ear or an extended arm for any hugs needed.

“We are so lucky to have such a great team who enjoy coming to work and Diane is one of the reasons why. Every team should have a Diane!”
