Dementia Action Week 2019

Posted on the 20th May 2019

With 1 in 3 people born in the UK this year predicted to develop dementia in their lifetimes, health professionals from Lancashire Care are supporting Dementia Action Week by raising awareness about the condition and encouraging people who have been newly diagnosed with dementia to ‘Join Dementia Research’.

Dementia Action Week (20-26 May) is a national campaign led by the Alzheimer’s Society and the focus this year is on encouraging people to take action by starting a conversation with someone living with dementia. To coincide with the week, staff from Lancashire Care are holding a number of events, including ‘wear denim for dementia’ days to encourage staff to wear denim to work and bake sales with proceeds going to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Staff will also use the occasion to encourage newly diagnosed people to join dementia research by having the conversation about how joining research can support the world in finding a cure for dementia in the future.

Dr Mark Worthington, Deputy Medical Director at Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust, said:

“Dementia Action Week is a great time to get people talking about dementia to raise awareness and reduce stigma. People can have a bleak image of what life will be like on receiving a dementia diagnosis. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. Dementia is often a life changing diagnosis but this doesn’t necessarily stop people being able to continue to live their lives as normal and to have new experiences. We want everyone with dementia to be supported to live well and we all have a role to play in making the UK a dementia-friendly place to live. That’s what Dementia Action Week is all about.”

There are over 15,500 people in Lancashire living with dementia, a number that is expected to continuously rise as people live longer.
